Snickers, Marathons & Wagon Wheels: Have Our Favourite Chocolate Bars Got Smaller… or Is It Just Us?

I was really feelin’ the urge for a naughty snack today… so I grabbed a crafty Snickers.

Standard move. No shame.

But halfway through eating it (and immediately deciding I probably didn’t need the whole thing), I had a moment…

“Hang on… this used to be bigger, didn’t it?”

And just like that, I found myself going down a full-blown chocolate nostalgia rabbit hole.

If you’re old enough (like me), you’ll remember it wasn’t even a Snickers to begin with.

It was a Marathon.

And I don’t know if it’s just me, but it felt like a proper bar back then. Like something you committed to. You didn’t just casually eat a Marathon… you planned it. Sat down with it. Maybe even needed a cup of tea to go with it.

Then one day — boom — it’s a Snickers.

Global branding, they said.

Still the same bar, they said.

And yet… something just didn’t feel quite the same.

(Also, let’s be honest, there’s still people out there — probably reading this — who refuse to call it anything other than a Marathon 😄)

Now let’s talk about the big one…

The size.

Because I’m convinced — absolutely convinced — they’ve got smaller.

And before anyone says it’s just nostalgia… they actually have.

They used to be around the low 60g mark, and over the years that’s crept down. Bit by bit. Quietly. Like they were hoping we wouldn’t notice.

We noticed.

Of course, it wasn’t all one-way traffic. There was a brief period where everything went the other direction — king size bars, bigger packs, “more for your money” vibes.

Then suddenly it flipped.

Health guidelines came in, costs went up, and before you knew it… everything was being “sensibly portioned”.

Which brings us nicely onto the modern classic…

The Duo bar.

Two smaller Snickers in one pack.

Now officially, that’s about portion control.

“Save one for later.”

Yeah… alright then.

Let’s be honest about how that actually goes:

  • You eat one

  • You think about the second

  • You eat the second

  • You briefly consider going for a walk

Same result, just with an extra step in the middle.

And it’s not just Snickers doing this.

Mars bars have quietly slimmed down.
Twix fingers feel a little less… generous than they used to.
Even Dairy Milk has been the centre of more debates than a family Christmas dinner.

It’s like the whole chocolate aisle has had a subtle makeover and hoped we wouldn’t notice.

But here’s where it gets interesting…

Some of this might not actually be the chocolate’s fault.

It might be us!!

Because cast your mind back…

Do you remember how big a Wagon Wheel used to feel?

Honestly — I’m sure they were the size of a dinner plate when I was younger. You practically needed both hands and a strategy to get through one.

Now? You eat it in about three bites and wonder what all the fuss was about.

But apparently… there’s been loads of debate about this. Some say they’ve shrunk, others say they haven’t really changed much at all.

Which means there’s a very real possibility that:

👉 We were just smaller
👉 And everything felt massive

Not sure I’m fully ready to accept that, but it’s a theory.

Then there’s the taste.

Now this is where people get passionate.

Technically, a Snickers is still a Snickers — peanuts, caramel, nougat, chocolate.

But you’ll always hear someone say:
“They don’t taste like they used to.”

Is that actual recipe tweaks?
Is it ingredients changing over time?
Or is it just nostalgia doing its thing?

Probably a bit of all three.

What’s interesting though is how this all ties into how we snack now.

Back then, it was:
👉 One big bar, job done

Now it’s more:
👉 Smaller portions
👉 More choice
👉 Snack now, snack later (or snack now and then again immediately…)

And you see that everywhere — not just in chocolate, but in how workplaces, shops, and even vending have evolved.

People don’t just want one option anymore — they want variety. Flexibility. The ability to grab something quickly without committing to a full-on sugar marathon (no pun intended… alright, maybe a little bit intended).

Anyway… back to the important stuff.

Was my Snickers still good?

Absolutely.

Still hit the spot. Still did the job.

Just maybe… finished a bit quicker than I remember.

So now I need to know…

👉 Were chocolate bars actually bigger back in the day?
👉 Or were we just smaller and easier to impress?

👉 And more importantly…
Are you still calling it a Marathon?

Be honest 😄

If your workplace snacks are still stuck in the Marathon era it might be time to see what’s changed….
