When the Going Gets Tough…

We've all heard the saying, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." Over the past few weeks, with temperatures reaching record highs across the UK, we've certainly seen plenty of examples of it.

Hot weather is fantastic when you're sitting in the garden with a cold drink. It's a little less enjoyable when you're responsible for keeping an office, factory or workplace supplied with drinking water and refreshments. As the temperature has climbed, so has demand for bottled water, cold drinks and coffee machine ingredients. That's no surprise – when it's over 30°C, people naturally drink more.

What has surprised us, though, is the number of businesses that have contacted us after being let down by their existing suppliers.

One company, who weren't even an H2O Vend customer, found themselves in a difficult position when their usual supplier was unable to fulfil their order. They urgently needed 150 bottles of water to keep their workforce hydrated.

They gave us a call.

Fortunately, because we carry good stock levels and have our own local delivery fleet, we were able to step in and get the water delivered, keeping their operation running and their staff supplied during the hottest spell of the year.

We've also had several businesses contact us because their coffee machines had broken down and they simply couldn't get an engineer out. Others were struggling to receive ingredients or consumables, leaving machines standing idle just when people needed them most.

In one case, we'd already helped a company out on several occasions, despite not being their main supplier. Eventually they reached the point where they decided enough was enough and asked us to take over all of their vending and coffee equipment.

That's never something we actively set out to do.

In fact, we'd much rather nobody found themselves in that position in the first place.

But it does highlight something we've always believed.

Service Matters

Anyone can sell a coffee machine.

Anyone can deliver a bottle of water.

The real test comes when things don't go to plan.

Can you still get hold of your supplier when demand suddenly doubles?

Will they answer the phone?

Can they deliver at short notice?

Can they actually solve the problem?

These are the moments that define a supplier.

It's easy to compare suppliers on price alone.

After all, a water cooler is a water cooler… isn't it?

Not quite.

The true value of a supplier isn't measured on the day you sign the agreement. It's measured six months later when you urgently need more water, when your coffee machine stops working, or when temperatures suddenly hit record levels and everyone wants cold drinks at once.

A slightly cheaper weekly rental soon loses its appeal if nobody answers the phone when you need help.
