But Why Has the Coffee Stopped?
What really happens after someone says, "The coffee machine's broken."
Most people never think about the machines that quietly keep Britain's workplaces running. They only notice when one stops. Spend a day alongside an H2O Vend engineer and you begin to realise the machines were never really the story.
There is a peculiar moment that occurs in almost every workplace in Britain, although very few people ever notice it.
It usually arrives somewhere between half past seven and nine o'clock, slipping quietly into the morning amongst all the other rituals we've performed so many times they no longer require thought. The same cars appear in the same corners of the car park. The same conversations begin before coats have even been taken off. Somebody is already discussing last night's football. Somewhere else, another unfortunate soul is staring into an inbox with the hollow expression of someone who's just discovered the meeting they were certain was tomorrow is, in fact, due to begin in six minutes.
Then, almost unconsciously, they drift towards the coffee machine.
Not because they're especially craving coffee.
Because that's simply what comes next.
Routine is an extraordinary thing. We spend years building it without ever meaning to, then become vaguely irritated the moment one tiny piece refuses to cooperate. The greeting from reception. The familiar walk through the warehouse or along the office corridor. The conversation while somebody waits for the lift. The coffee before the computer has even finished starting up.
Nobody plans these habits.
They simply arrive one ordinary morning and, before long, become part of the furniture.
The coffee machine is one of those pieces of furniture.
Most people couldn't tell you what make it is. Fewer still could describe what actually happens after they press the button. They know, in roughly the same way they know the lights will come on when they flick a switch, that somewhere inside the cabinet a great many things happen on their behalf.
A paper cup slips from a stack hidden high inside the machine before dropping neatly into the waiting cup arm below. Coffee beans tumble towards a grinder before being measured into a brewer where almost boiling water is forced through under pressure to produce an espresso. At exactly the same moment, dried milk begins its own journey through augers towards mixing bowls where, for a few brief seconds, powder and hot water become something remarkably close to fresh milk before joining the coffee on its journey to the cup.
Hundreds of tiny movements.
Hundreds of tiny decisions.
All completed in less time than it takes to answer the inevitable question from the colleague standing behind you.
"Fancy one while you're here?"
Nobody watches any of it.
Nor should they.
Twenty seconds later they're walking back towards their desk carrying a cappuccino that's already become less interesting than the email waiting on the screen.
The machine has done its job so perfectly that it has become invisible.
Which, when you think about it, is rather the point.
Until the morning it isn't.
The payment reader chirps with its usual quiet confidence.
The paper cup drops obediently into place.
The display glows.
Then...
Nothing.
Not dramatic nothing.
There are no sparks. No alarming noises. No clouds of steam escaping from hidden corners of the cabinet.
Simply... nothing.
The sort of silence that persuades perfectly sensible adults to press exactly the same button again in the optimistic belief that machinery, like people, occasionally just needs asking twice.
It doesn't.
Another colleague wanders into the break room.
"Broken?"
"It looks like it."
Within a minute, the diagnosis has spread through the building with remarkable efficiency. Reception somehow knows before the warehouse does. Production know before accounts. Somebody jokes that productivity has already taken a serious hit. Someone else wonders aloud whether there's a kettle hidden away somewhere before remembering there hasn't been one for years.
Coffee machines are rather like referees.
Nobody notices them while they're doing their job properly.
The moment they stop, everybody suddenly has an opinion.
An engineer doesn't really commute to work.
Work is already waiting outside.
The white van on the driveway isn't simply transport. By the time the front door closes behind him it has already become office, workshop, stores and, more often than not, somewhere to eat lunch between jobs. It will remain all four until sometime this evening, when it returns home carrying a completely different collection of stories to the ones it left with this morning.
From the outside, the three engineering vans look much the same.
Inside, they're as individual as the people who drive them.
Every engineer develops their own system over the years. One keeps shelves arranged with almost military precision, every storage bin facing forwards and every fitting returned to exactly the place it came from. Another appears, to the untrained eye, to have embraced complete disorder. Pumps sit beside refrigeration parts, wiring looms share space with brewer mechanisms and drawers of assorted fixings whose original packaging disappeared years ago.
It shouldn't work.
Yet ask either engineer for a particular fitting and they'll reach straight towards it without so much as a glance.
Experience, it turns out, is a remarkably efficient filing system.
The vans carry around two hundred of the parts most likely to interrupt somebody's day if they weren't immediately available. Pumps. Motors. Valves. Filters. Sensors. Brewer mechanisms. The expensive, machine-specific parts remain on the shelves back at Tilney until they're genuinely needed.
Everything else travels.
Five thousand pounds' worth of accumulated probability.
Because engineering isn't really about knowing what's going to fail.
It's about preparing for the things that probably will.
There are, of course, things that never appear on any stock list.
An empty can of Monster rolling lazily around the passenger footwell.
Yesterday's McDonald's breakfast making increasingly optimistic promises about being thrown away later.
The old screwdriver that should probably have retired years ago but somehow always ends up back in the engineer's hand.
Every van has one.
Nobody knows why.
The standing joke around the workshop is that the only part missing from the van today will inevitably become the one desperately needed just before home time.
Outside, East Anglia is only just beginning to wake. Delivery wagons drift towards industrial estates, tractors quietly collect queues behind them and somewhere ahead another set of temporary traffic lights is already persuading perfectly sensible adults to question every decision ever made by the highways department.
Inside the van, the radio is talking about cricket.
Or football.
Depending entirely on the season.
The engineer hears most of it.
Very little of it stays.
Spend enough time around engineers and you begin to realise they're remarkably comfortable with silence.
Perhaps that's because they spend so much of their lives listening.
Not to people.
To machines.
“Customers explain what they think has happened.
Machines explain what actually did.”
People imagine engineers work alone.
Physically they do. Most service calls involve one van, one engineer and one customer. Professionally, however, they're rarely more than a few seconds away from one another.
By the time most people are pouring their first coffee, the engineers' WhatsApp group has already been awake for an hour.
A photograph of a fault code.
A short video of a grinder that doesn't quite sound right.
An operator asking whether a machine recovered after yesterday's reset.
"Anybody seen this before?"
The replies rarely take long.
Not because everyone is staring at their phones.
Because somebody almost certainly has.
Experience doesn't stay with the person who first discovers it. One engineer learns something on a cold February morning in Norwich. By the middle of summer somebody else benefits from it in Peterborough without ever knowing where the answer first came from.
The lessons aren't delivered in classrooms.
They're exchanged in passing.
"I've had one do that."
"Listen to it before you take it apart."
"Check the obvious things last."
It's an odd sentence, that last one.
Most people are taught to check the obvious things first.
Engineers eventually learn that the obvious answer often disguises the real question.
A thumbs-up appears on the screen.
Another engineer has already arrived at his first customer.
The messages stop.
Not because the conversation has finished.
Because the day has.
Or rather...
Because it's finally begun.
Industrial estates all seem to wake in much the same way.
Roller shutter doors rattle upwards one after another like somebody opening a pack of oversized playing cards. Forklift trucks emerge from warehouses carrying pallets that always appear considerably heavier than physics ought to allow. Delivery wagons reverse with exaggerated caution while men in high-visibility jackets stride purposefully across the yard carrying clipboards, coffee cups or, occasionally, absolutely nothing at all.
It's remarkable how urgent somebody can look while apparently going nowhere.
The engineer parks the van.
Somewhere inside the building, the coffee machine is waiting.
So is the customer.
They apologise before the toolbox has even left the passenger seat.
"Sorry to drag you out."
It's a sentence every engineer hears so often it barely registers.
"You didn't."
The reply arrives almost automatically.
Not because it's polite.
Because it's true.
Machines have never cared what time it is. If they decide to stop making coffee at eight o'clock on a Tuesday morning, then that's simply where the engineer's day intersects with somebody else's.
No drama.
Just another story.
By the time the engineer arrives, the operator has already done the obvious things. They've checked ingredients, reset the machine and worked through the handful of simple checks experience has taught them to try first. They know these machines almost as well as the engineers do, and more often than not they've already ruled out the straightforward answers.
Only then does the engineer step in.
Customers often expect the repair to begin the moment the machine door opens.
Instead, the engineer does absolutely nothing.
He stands in front of the machine with his hands in his pockets.
Watching.
Listening.
Waiting.
Standing perfectly still is often the most productive thing an engineer does all day.
Customers find it faintly unsettling.
After all, they've reported a fault.
Surely now is the moment for screwdrivers, multimeters and impressive-looking technical equipment.
Instead, the engineer asks for another cappuccino.
The Nayax reader acknowledges the payment with its familiar chirp. A paper cup slips neatly into place.
Then the grinder begins.
Or rather...
It almost does.
Most people in the room never hear it.
Not because it's quiet.
Because it only sounds fractionally different to yesterday.
Like hearing an old friend clear their throat before they've spoken.
You couldn't explain how you knew.
You simply did.
The grinder is working just a little harder than it should.
The coffee arrives.
Short.
Strong.
Perfectly drinkable.
Perfectly wrong.
It's the sort of cup that sends inexperienced engineers looking towards the hydraulic system. Less coffee must mean less water.
It sounds perfectly logical.
Which is unfortunate.
Experience teaches that the obvious answer is often standing directly in front of the real one.
The engineer barely looks at the coffee.
He's watching something else entirely.
Inside the cabinet, the brewer closes around freshly ground coffee with the quiet confidence of a mechanism that has repeated exactly the same movement hundreds of thousands of times before.
Hot water begins forcing its way through the compacted coffee.
The espresso arrives.
The drink finishes.
The brewer opens, ready to release the spent coffee biscuit into the waste bucket beneath.
Except...
It doesn't quite fall.
It crumbles.
Only slightly.
A few dark fragments cling stubbornly to the brew chamber before the mechanism closes once more.
The customer doesn't notice.
Why would they?
They're looking at the coffee.
The engineer is looking at yesterday.
Because that's where the fault really began.
Not this morning.
Not even the previous drink.
Several coffees ago the grinder had quietly drifted a little finer than it should have done. Each coffee biscuit became fractionally denser than the one before it. Water found it slightly harder to pass through. Tiny fragments began staying behind after every vend until, drink by drink, the machine created the fault the customer would eventually report.
The customer notices the moment routine breaks.
The engineer is looking for the moment it first changed.
Trevor has a saying that's survived longer than many of the machines themselves.
"Machines don't just stop."
Around the workshop there's another.
"Don't look at what's going on. Look for what's not."
They're really saying the same thing.
The adjustment itself takes only a few moments.
Not because the repair is simple.
Because the diagnosis is.
Those are two very different skills.
Another coffee.
The grinder sounds easier somehow.
The brewer opens.
This time the spent coffee biscuit drops cleanly into the waste bucket with a reassuring little thud that would mean absolutely nothing to almost anybody else.
To the engineer, it says everything.
Another coffee follows, then another, until the machine has convinced the engineer it really has remembered how to make coffee again.
Anybody can persuade a machine to behave once.
The trick is making sure it hasn't merely decided to be polite while you're standing there.
Only then do the tools return to the van.
The customer thanks him and asks what was wrong.
By the time the van is joining the traffic again, the customer has gone back to work and the coffee machine has already become invisible once more.
Back on the road, the morning has settled into that familiar rhythm known only to people whose office window changes every half an hour.
The roads that seemed almost empty before sunrise have remembered they're in Britain. Vans collect patiently behind tractors travelling at precisely the speed required to ensure nobody arrives quite when they intended. Industrial estates appear to have been designed by somebody who regarded right angles as an exciting challenge, and temporary traffic lights guard what appears to be a single man leaning thoughtfully on a shovel while half a dozen vehicles wait with remarkable obedience.
The cricket reaches drinks.
The engineer smiles to himself.
Machines have a habit of doing much the same thing.
The phone mounted to the dashoard chirps.
Another job appears.
A planned service slips backwards. A refrigeration fault climbs the list. Somewhere an operator has reported a machine behaving oddly after the breakfast rush.
Nobody seems particularly surprised.
“Job sheets have always been optimistic documents.
The day itself rarely bothers reading them.”
The next customer is waiting by a snack machine.
"I think it's dead."
There is a confidence about the diagnosis that suggests it has already been discussed by half the office.
The machine itself appears considerably less concerned.
Its display is illuminated. The refrigeration system hums steadily beneath the cabinet. The Nayax reader accepts a bank card without hesitation before politely refunding the transaction.
It isn't dead.
It simply refuses to vend one particular chocolate bar.
There is an old saying amongst engineers that customers rarely describe the fault.
They describe the inconvenience.
Those are two very different conversations.
Through the glass everything looks exactly as it should.
Except one.
One chocolate bar has settled itself at precisely the wrong angle.
The spiral has done exactly what it was asked to do.
The chocolate hasn't.
The engineer opens the cabinet, turns the spiral by hand, closes the door and presses the same selection.
The chocolate drops obediently into the collection tray with its familiar plastic thud.
The customer looks mildly puzzled.
"So... it wasn't broken?"
The engineer smiles.
"It depends which bit you thought was."
It's one of those answers that seems unnecessarily philosophical until you've spent enough time around machinery.
People ask why they didn't get a chocolate bar.
Engineers ask why the spiral stopped turning.
One question solves today's problem.
The other usually prevents tomorrow's.
Watching an experienced engineer work can be faintly disappointing if you're expecting drama.
There is remarkably little of it.
No frantic dismantling.
No theatrical declarations.
No muttered predictions of catastrophic failure.
Mostly just watching.
Listening.
Thinking.
The tools, impressive though they may be, are rarely the cleverest thing in the van.
The engineer is.
One refrigeration fan sounds fractionally different from the one beside it. A compressor continues running just a little longer than experience says it should. A payment reader hesitates before accepting a card. Somewhere else, a water valve takes half a second longer to close than it did during the last service.
None of those things would concern a customer.
Most would never notice.
Nor should they.
By the time they do, the engineer is already late.
Preventative maintenance suffers from a rather unfortunate image problem.
When it's done properly, absolutely nothing happens.
Nobody notices the coffee machine serving another three hundred drinks without complaint.
Success, in engineering, has a frustrating habit of looking exactly like yesterday.
Panels come away. Filters are replaced. Grinders adjusted. Electrical connections checked.
The operators have already done what they always do, keeping the machines clean, stocked and presentable. They understand that customers judge the outside long before they taste what's inside.
The engineer is looking somewhere else entirely.
Not at cleanliness.
At wear.
Movement.
Heat.
Time.
In East Anglia, tomorrow's breakdown usually has a familiar accomplice, Limescale.
Filters help. Regular servicing helps rather more. Neither wins.
By lunchtime the engineer has already wandered through a surprising cross-section of East Anglian life.
Factories where hundreds of people appear and disappear with military precision at break times.
Distribution centres where forklifts seem permanently engaged in complicated dances around one another.
Every warehouse has one man who somehow knows exactly where everybody else's forklift should be, whether they asked him or not.
Village offices where everyone appears to know everyone else's children, dogs and holiday plans before they've even sat down.
The buildings change.
The conversations rarely do.
"Sorry to bother you."
"It was fine yesterday."
"It's been doing it for ages..."
Usually announced only after it has finally stopped altogether.
One customer complains that the water from a cooler tastes "a bit funny."
There is no fault code for a bit funny.
No warning light labelled slightly odd.
The engineer fills a glass.
Looks at it.
Smells it.
Tastes it.
Only then does the front panel come away.
The filter has simply reached the end of the quiet life it was designed to live.
Nothing has failed.
Nothing has broken.
Time has merely caught up with it.
The replacement itself takes only a few minutes.
Lunch eventually happens.
It usually bears only a passing resemblance to whatever time was originally intended.
Sometimes it's eaten overlooking a field.
Sometimes beside a warehouse loading bay.
Occasionally in the driver's seat while waiting for a customer who confidently promised they'd "only be five minutes."
They rarely are.
Somewhere behind the passenger seat an empty drinks bottle rolls lazily from one side of the van to the other as another roundabout appears.
The cricket has given way to local news.
The sandwich disappears in three bites.
The phone chirps once more.
Another message.
Another postcode.
Another story.
By now the carefully planned route that looked so sensible before sunrise bears only a passing resemblance to reality.
It always does.
There is something wonderfully optimistic about a job sheet printed before most people have even left home.
Reality, of course, has other ideas.
A refrigeration system stops cooling.
A water cooler develops a leak.
A machine refuses to accept payments fifteen minutes before the lunchtime rush.
The day rearranges itself.
Nobody appears particularly offended by this.
After enough years, engineers stop believing the phone on the dashboard is telling them what they're doing today.
It is merely introducing them to whoever needs them next.
For almost twenty minutes the phone stays quiet.
Nobody comments on it.
Some things are best left unsaid.
By the time the afternoon begins leaning towards evening, the roads all seem to point gently back towards Tilney.
Not because the work is finished.
Simply because today's stories are ready to be exchanged for tomorrow's.
The first van turns into the yard just after half past four.
Another follows a few minutes later.
Then the third.
One by one the side doors slide open and the day's work quietly begins flowing back into the workshop.
Not just the machines.
The stories.
A grinder wrapped carefully in a rag.
A chiller unit that finally admitted defeat somewhere outside Thetford.
A leaking valve.
A control board carrying nothing more than a handwritten label.
INTERMITTENT.
It doesn't go into the scrap bin.
Not yet.
One of the first things you notice around the workshop is that failed parts are treated with rather more respect than you might expect. In many businesses a faulty circuit board is simply replaced and forgotten. Here, it's far more likely to find itself on a bench with somebody asking one more question.
"Why?"
Sometimes there isn't an answer.
Sometimes there is.
Occasionally that answer prevents another failure six months later.
Engineering, like most worthwhile things, advances one small curiosity at a time.
The workshop sounds different now.
Not quieter.
Softer.
The urgency that accompanied the morning has dissolved into conversation. Ultrasonic baths hiss briefly before falling silent. Socket sets click shut. Somewhere a brewer mechanism is being rebuilt while another engineer replenishes the shelves inside his van with the parts that disappeared throughout the day.
Coffee machines occupy almost every spare corner.
Some have just returned from site.
Others are halfway through refurbishment.
A few are making drink after drink beneath handwritten Post-it notes.
USE THIS ONE.
Another, polished and clearly destined for a customer demonstration later in the week, carries a rather more protective instruction.
DO NOT ROB. MACHINE SET FOR DEMO.
Nobody laughs because the note is unusual.
They laugh because everyone knows exactly why it's there.
Every workshop develops its own unwritten rules.
Around Tilney, one of them is that the perfect spare part sitting inside tomorrow's demonstration machine has an uncanny habit of becoming today's emergency repair unless somebody physically tells everyone to leave it alone.
Experience, it seems, occasionally requires stationery.
The stories begin almost immediately.
"You'll never guess what I saw today..."
It's probably the most common sentence in the workshop.
Not because today's faults were especially unusual.
Because every engineer secretly believes today's was slightly stranger than yesterday's.
Someone had driven across two counties to investigate a coffee machine that apparently refused to make lattes.
It turned out the customer had spent the previous week pressing the espresso button.
Another machine that was confidently diagnosed as "completely dead" had simply been unplugged so the cleaner could use the vacuum cleaner.
Again.
A snack machine that had apparently "just stopped" displayed all the familiar signs of having recently lost an argument with somebody who believed rocking it violently was a recognised engineering technique.
The anti-vandal feet had survived.
The machine had survived.
The customer's explanation remained remarkably unchanged.
"It just stopped."
And then there are the veterans.
Machines that have somehow been serving drinks since the very beginning.
Around the workshop they're spoken about with the same affection normally reserved for elderly relatives who have earned the right to ignore modern fashions.
Somebody inevitably compares them to Trigger's broom.
Nobody is entirely sure how much of the original machine still exists.
A new boiler here.
Half a dozen valves there.
It doesn't matter.
The serial number may belong to 1996.
The coffee belongs to this morning.
Officially, everyone finishes at five.
Officially.
Reality has always preferred writing its own timetable.
One engineer is rebuilding a tabletop machine because tomorrow will be easier if it's finished tonight.
Another loads tomorrow's chiller unit and water filters before closing the van door once again.
The vans don't really come home.
They simply pause.
Tomorrow morning they'll become offices, workshops and stores all over again.
It is only after spending a day alongside the engineers that something else becomes obvious.
Nobody ever rings H2O Vend because they're worried about a failed spiral motor.
Or a worn grinder.
Or a sticking solenoid valve.
They ring because the coffee before the morning meeting never arrived.
Because the bottle of cold juice after unloading an artic wasn't cold.
Because the chocolate bar somebody has bought every Tuesday for the last three years stubbornly refused to appear.
Machines are simply where those moments happen to live.
Trevor has a habit of gently steering conversations back towards exactly that point.
Somebody might be enthusiastically discussing a new machine with a larger touch screen, a faster grinder or another dozen drink selections.
Trevor listens.
He always listens.
Then, usually after a thoughtful pause, he'll shrug.
"What people remember..."
Another pause.
"...is the coffee in the cup."
Nobody leaves work talking about the specification of the coffee machine.
They remember the conversation they had while drinking the coffee.
The glass of cold water after a long shift.
The chocolate bar grabbed between meetings.
The machine was never really the point.
It was simply the vehicle.
The following morning, somewhere in a factory, an office, a school, a hospital or a warehouse, somebody walks into a break room without giving the coffee machine a second thought.
The card touches the reader.
The familiar chirp answers back.
A paper cup slips neatly into place.
Twenty seconds later they're back at their desk, already thinking about emails, meetings or whatever the rest of the morning has waiting for them.
They won't remember the grinder.
Or the brewer.
Or the engineer who spent yesterday morning standing in silence with his hands in his pockets.
They'll remember the coffee.
Which, in the end, was always the point.
